We had a wonderful trip on our honeymoon! We were welcomed by the monks and other staff there and enjoyed everything: the delicious food, the (free!) tracing of sutras, meditation session and early morning ceremony. It was a fantastic insight into the lives of Buddhist monks and nuns, as well as allowing us to stay in such a breathtakingly beautiful temple. As a LGBTQ couple, we were completely respected and welcomed. I highly recommend!

Lobby or reception in Koyasan Shukubo Yochiin

This was such an amazing experience in such a beautiful temple with wonderfully kind Monks. We had a monk there as well who spoke English and was able to translate and was very informative about Japanese history, culture, and ofcourse on Buddhism. We enjoyed the welcome tea and snack, the dinner and breakfast exceeded our expectations, and joining the morning service was also very interesting. The room was really nice with a garden view. The temple had zen gardens in the front and garden views from walking inside the temple and from our room. It was also less then 5 minute walk from the main sites of Koyasan! We highly recommend staying here!

The reception by the monks was delightful, and you could tell they were happy to have us. My wife and I had a wonderful dinner - the best vegan food I've had. We also got to take part in the monks morning ceremony, including burning wood chips in an incense bowl, chanting the heart mantra with the monks and being told the story of the temple. This was available in both japanese and english. We were also allowed to walk around (and take pictures) of their sacred hall, which was incredibly beautiful and rich in history and culture. A true delight!

Food and drinks in Koyasan Shukubo Yochiin

The temple stay was wonderful. Our room was gorgeous, looking into an inner garden, with a lovely bathroom and a huge wardrobe. It was spotlessly clean and extremely spacious. We were offered hakatas, and took the delicious veggie dinner and breakfast in a side room of the temple. The staff were so polite and helpful and one monk took us on a very informative tour of the graveyard after dark on Halloween - perfect. We were lucky enough to attend the morning prayer ceremony with only one other guest which made it very intimate, in the stunning inner sanctum. The whole building and its gardens are really fabulous. I wasn’t sure what to expect and if we would feel like intruders, but the stay was way beyond our expectations

This temple is 900 years old, and the experience of staying here really was the highlight of our entire two week trip to Japan. I highly recommend you stay here if you get the chance. it’s right in the middle of all the must see places in Koyosan, so location is great. I’ve seen a couple reviews complaining about the cold, but our room was toasty warm and perfect for us. The morning ceremony and traditional breakfast were both amazing and authentic experiences that we’ll never forget. We loved it!

Beautiful temple where you can enjoy Otsutome morning ceremony. There's free parking and the location it's just in front of the main temple. There's also a convenience store close to the accommodation. I recomend this Shukubo only for people who know where they are going and are willing to enjoy the spiritual experience. It's not a hotel, therefore you don't decide when to check in, when to have dinner or when to wake up.. Also, since it's a traditional concept there's only sento style bathroom, which means the shower room is shared. All meals are vegetarian in the Shojin ryori buddhist style. If you are willing to enjoy the traditional Japan, this is definitely your place.

Garden view in Koyasan Shukubo Yochiin

Wow! I stayed in the massive suite with private bath that was surrounded by a lovely garden. It was super clean and the details were beautiful. I felt honored to be able to join the monks for morning prayers and the food here was delicious. The location could not be more perfect. It is right across the street from one of the main temple/shrine complexes. I was able to walk around the temples with the glowing lanterns in the evening and it was magical!

Asian breakfast in Koyasan Shukubo Yochiin

The location is close to everything. Highly recommend the evening tour of the cemetery!! One of the monks took us around, told us all about the cemetery and it’s history and some basics of Japanese Buddhist beliefs and legends. It was a highlight of my entire Japan trip. It was great to experience the morning prayer ceremony also. We were so grateful to be welcomed and get to see a small part of life for the people living at yochi in. The food was simple but lovely and the futon was surprisingly comfortable. There is a convenience store very close by which was great 😊

This place exceeded my expectations. I did not expect the room to be so nice, large, and have a wonderful table and seat space with a large window and small garden view. The place is just beautiful, and I was very appreciative that I could join in the morning ceremony. Truly a wonderful experience.

- We liked being in a small temple, with a very calm and tranquil atmosphere and lovely peaceful gardens. - The monks were very helpful and welcoming and took time to explain their traditions to us. We learnt a lot about Shingon Buddhism and Koyasan during our short stay. - The Buddhist vegetarian food served for dinner and breakfast was delicious. - The traditional room was simple but spacious and comfortable and very quiet. We did not have any issues with using the shared toilet facilities and the traditional (single sex) bathhouse was pleasant and relaxing. - Attending morning prayers was a unique experience that we will not forget. Again the monks took time to explain the ceremony to all the guests attending. - We really enjoyed going on the guided tour of the Koyasan cemetery with one of the monks in the evening. The visit was very informative, interesting and atmospheric.
